I love French toast! There are many ways to elevate it like topping with an apple pie-inspired topping. The sourdough bread is light and chewy. The apple pie topping is reminiscent of the delicious filling of an apple pie. Bites of flavorful apples have a tender crunch, meaning they are tender with a slight crunch on top of toast generously sprinkled with cinnamon sugar. This Apple Pie French Toast is definitely worth making for breakfast . . . or any time of the day. Lol!
I love the texture the cinnamon sugar gives the outer layer of the French toast. You can leave the skin on your apples if you choose. You can also slice the apples into bigger pieces. Have fun!
If you’d like, you can even sprinkle more cinnamon and sugar after the French toast is plated. Sprinkle with a little powdered sugar if you’d like.
Cook on low heat to medium heat for about 8-10 minutes.
CINNAMON SUGAR
Mix all of the ingredients together.
FRENCH TOAST
Mix together all of the ingredients with the exception of the sourdough bread.
Cut off the ends of the loaf. Slice the loaf of bread into 1-inch slices. You should get about 6 slices.
Depending on the size of your skillet, you can begin putting the sliced bread in the French toast mixture 3 slices at a time.
Heat skillet on low to medium. The skillet should be hot enough to toast the bread without it sticking to the skillet, but low enough so the cinnamon sugar can create a slight caramelization without the bread burning.
Add a tbsp of butter if toasting 3 slices at a time. A a little less if you are toasting 1-2 slices at a time.
Sprinkle a generous amount of cinnamon sugar on the side of the toast that's to be toasted first. When that side of toast is golden brown, flip and sprinkle a generous amount of cinnamon sugar on the other side of the slice of toast.
Repeat with each slice.
As the French toast is finished, put it on a plate, and top it with apple pie topping and syrup.
